Germany: rebuild under Nagelsmann

Germany have won the World Cup four times (1954, 1974, 1990, 2014) and reached the final on four other occasions. Their 2022 group-stage exit in Qatar was a national emergency; the 2026 cycle is the rebuild.

Julian Nagelsmann, the 38-year-old former Bayern coach, took over in September 2023 and has rebuilt around the Bayer Leverkusen 2023-24 spine of Wirtz, Tah and Frimpong, plus Bayern's Musiala and Kimmich. The squad is younger and more technically fluent than the rigid 2022 group.

Something cool: Manuel Neuer is back. The 40-year-old goalkeeper, part of the 2014 World Cup-winning squad, returns from retirement after Marc-Andre ter Stegen's injury opened the door. Neuer last played a World Cup match in 2022.

Curacao: smallest nation in history

Curacao is a Caribbean island of fewer than 160,000 people, formerly part of the Netherlands Antilles. Their qualification for 2026 makes them the smallest country ever to reach a World Cup, ahead of Iceland (population 380,000) and Trinidad and Tobago.

The Curacao squad is mostly composed of Dutch-Caribbean dual nationals who chose to represent Curacao over the Netherlands. Tahith Chong (Sheffield United, ex-Manchester United youth), Cuco Martina, and Eloy Room are among the names familiar to European football fans.

Something cool: Their head coach is Dick Advocaat, the 78-year-old Dutch legend whose CV includes the Netherlands, Russia, South Korea, Belgium, Serbia, UAE, Sunderland and Rangers. He becomes the oldest manager to ever take charge of a World Cup match, breaking Otto Rehhagel's record from 2010.

Curacao qualified by topping the CONCACAF Final Round on goal difference, finishing 3-3-0 with the dramatic final-day goalless draw away to Jamaica sealing their place. They scored 9 across the qualifying matches, with no player scoring more than 2.

Tactical preview: pressing high vs sitting in

Germany under Nagelsmann play a positional 4-2-3-1 with the full-backs (Kimmich and Raum) holding very wide while the wingers (Adeyemi and Musiala) cut inside. Wirtz operates as a true ten between the lines, with Havertz functioning more as a withdrawn ten than a classic nine. Pavlovic anchors the midfield with Goretzka or Andrich slotting in beside him.

Curacao's response under Advocaat will almost certainly be a 5-4-1 with deep block. The Dutch veteran has played this shape multiple times against superior opposition in his long career and it is the only realistic approach. The two banks of five and four will compress the field, force Germany into wide areas, and rely on Tahith Chong's pace on the counter when possession turns over.

Germany's expected path is straightforward: top Group E with three wins, draw a third-placed side in the Round of 32, then a likely Round of 16 fixture against a Group F runner-up (probably Japan or Sweden). The deeper run becomes interesting in the quarter-finals where they could meet Brazil, Spain or Argentina depending on the bracket.

Curacao's realistic objective is the third-placed qualification path: finish third in Group E and hope to be one of the eight best third-placed teams across the 12 groups. To do that they likely need 4 points minimum, which means avoiding heavy defeats and stealing a draw against Ecuador or Ivory Coast.
