Value Tip BTTS Yes 1.75 +20% edge

Why: Both sides are open and attack-minded. Belgium have scored in 9 of their last 10 matches; Egypt have scored in 8 of theirs. Belgium's defence has aged: Vertonghen, Faes, Witsel are all over 30 and not the press-resistant unit they once were. Egypt's attack is built around Salah, Marmoush and Trezeguet, all of whom find goals. BTTS Yes hit rate looks closer to 70% than the implied 57%.

MS
Anytime Goalscorer Tip
Mohamed Salah
Liverpool · Egypt captain · 64 international goals

Salah enters his second World Cup with his peak years extended. 64 international goals, the all-time Egypt record. His 2025-26 Liverpool season produced 22 Premier League goals, his best return since 2021-22. Belgium's right-back position will be his target. Typical Anytime price 1.80.

AW
Card Prediction
Axel Witsel
Girona · Belgium defender · 144 caps, tactical fouler

Witsel has converted to centre-back in his late career. Against Salah's pace he will need to commit tactical fouls to compensate for the speed mismatch. He has averaged a yellow every 4-5 matches across his career. Anytime Card around 3.00.

The stadium: Lumen Field, Seattle

The match is at Lumen Field, the home of the NFL's Seattle Seahawks and MLS's Seattle Sounders. Soccer capacity 69,000 for the 2026 World Cup configuration. Real grass rather than artificial turf, a critical detail for player feedback.

Lumen Field will host six matches at the 2026 World Cup including group stage and a Round of 32. The Seattle Sounders' established MLS fan culture promises one of the best atmospheres of the tournament.

Belgium: Golden Generation's last dance

Belgium's Golden Generation (De Bruyne, Hazard, Lukaku, Courtois, Witsel) reached the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, their best result in tournament history. The 2022 Qatar campaign ended in group-stage elimination, signalling the end of the era.

Rudi Garcia, the French coach with previous stints at Marseille, Roma and Lyon, took over in January 2025. Hazard has retired but De Bruyne (34) and Lukaku (32) remain, joined by younger players like Doku, Tielemans and Tchouameni.

Something cool: Belgium captain Romelu Lukaku is the country's all-time top scorer with 89 international goals. He sits 4 goals away from the FIFA-recognised European international goalscoring record.

Egypt: Salah's last shot

Egypt have qualified for four World Cups (1934, 1990, 2018, 2026) and never advanced past the group stage. The 2018 campaign was famously derailed when Salah picked up a shoulder injury in the Champions League final two weeks before kick-off.

Hossam Hassan, himself a Pharaohs legend (69 international goals, the previous Egypt record before Salah broke it), took over as manager in 2024. The squad combines Salah and Premier League names like Marmoush (Man City) with players from the Egyptian Premier League's heavyweight clubs Al Ahly and Zamalek.

Something cool: Mohamed Salah is on the verge of becoming the first African player to score in three different World Cups. His goal against Russia in 2018 and Saudi Arabia (penalty) opened his account; goals in 2026 would tie him with Diego Maradona for most World Cups scored at among captains.

The captains

YT
Youri Tielemans
Central midfielder · Belgium captain · Aston Villa

Tielemans took the Belgium armband from Hazard in 2024. The 28-year-old Aston Villa midfielder is the rare leader from the post-Golden Generation, bridging the bigger names (De Bruyne, Lukaku) with the next wave.

Club journey: Anderlecht to Monaco to Leicester City (FA Cup winner 2021, scored the winning goal in the final) to Aston Villa in 2023.

His box-to-box style, set-piece delivery and calm tactical reading make him the natural captain for Garcia's blueprint. At his third World Cup as a player and first as captain.

MS
Mohamed Salah
Right winger · Egypt captain · Liverpool

Salah was confirmed as Egypt captain in May 2026 after a long-standing rotation with veteran Mohamed El-Shenawy. The Liverpool forward is Egypt's all-time top scorer with 64 international goals across 104 caps.

Club achievements: Premier League titles (2020, 2025), Champions League (2019), African Footballer of the Year multiple times, Premier League Golden Boot multiple times.

At 33 in his second World Cup. His 2018 tournament was wrecked by injury; this is the chance to finally produce a Salah World Cup performance. Egypt's qualification was significantly down to his goals (8 in qualifying).

Tactical preview: ageing stars vs Salah's prime

Rudi Garcia's Belgium have settled on a 4-3-3 with Tielemans as the defensive anchor, De Bruyne as the right-sided creator, Onana as the box-to-box runner, and Lukaku as the focal point. Doku and Trossard provide width with the freedom to swap sides during games. The back four is older (Vertonghen, Faes, Castagne, Theate) but disciplined.

Hossam Hassan's Egypt play a 4-2-3-1 designed entirely around Salah. The midfielders behind him (Elneny, Fathi) are tasked with both ball recovery and quick distribution to release the Liverpool man into space. Marmoush operates from the left as an inside-forward, creating space for Salah to drift centrally when needed.

The key tactical battle: Salah vs Belgium's right side. Castagne at right-back and Onana in front of him will be tasked with containing the Egypt captain. Castagne is solid but not quick; Onana's defensive positioning has been questioned at club level. Salah should find moments.

Key matchups

What to watch for

Belgium's pattern under Garcia has been: dominate the first 60 minutes, then concede the late goal. The 2-2 draw with Italy and the 3-2 win over Germany both followed this template. If Egypt can stay within one goal at the 70-minute mark, the late phase becomes interesting.

De Bruyne's form is the swing factor. When he plays at peak level, Belgium are unstoppable. When his back issues flare up (as they did in late 2025), the team loses 30 percent of its creative output.

Path to the Round of 32

Belgium expect to top Group G but the matches against Iran and Egypt are not gimmes. The path to a deeper run requires winning the group rather than scraping second.

Egypt's realistic path runs through a Belgium draw or win, then beating both Iran and New Zealand. Achievable with Salah on form.
