The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the first to feature 48 teams, expanded from 32. The 48 teams are split into 12 groups of 4. The top 2 from each group (24 teams) qualify automatically for the Round of 32, joined by the 8 best third-placed teams across all groups. That gives 32 teams in the knockout stage.
From the Round of 32 onward, it is a single-elimination bracket. No replays, no second legs. Extra time and penalties decide drawn matches. The bracket splits into two halves: the left side leads to Semi-Final 1, and the right side leads to Semi-Final 2. The two semi-final winners meet in the Final.
This format means every team plays a minimum of 3 group matches and a maximum of 7 matches (if they reach the Final). The expansion adds an extra knockout round compared to previous World Cups, making the path to the trophy longer and more demanding.
Each group position maps to a specific slot in the Round of 32 bracket. Group winners and runners-up have predetermined bracket placements, while third-placed teams are assigned based on which groups they come from.

Note: The third-placed team assignments depend on which specific groups produce qualifying third-placed teams. FIFA publishes multiple assignment tables covering every possible combination. The exact slots are determined after all group matches are completed.
The bracket is divided cleanly into two halves. Here is how the matches feed through each round.
MetLife Stadium will host the biggest sporting event of the year with a capacity of over 82,000. The venue is located just outside New York City and has hosted multiple Super Bowls. The semi-finals are split between Dallas and Atlanta, both major NFL venues with world-class facilities.
Eight of the twelve third-placed teams advance to the Round of 32. After all group matches are completed, the eight best third-placed teams are ranked by points, goal difference, and goals scored. Their bracket placement follows a pre-determined FIFA assignment table.
The assignment ensures that third-placed teams do not face a winner from their own group in the Round of 32, and that they are distributed evenly across both sides of the bracket. The exact placement depends on which combination of groups produce the qualifying third-placed teams.
Because there are 12 groups and 8 qualifying spots for third-placed teams, 4 third-placed teams will be eliminated. This makes every group match critical. A team finishing third with 3 or 4 points may not advance if other groups produce stronger third-placed finishers. Teams finishing third should target at least 4 points and a positive goal difference to feel safe.
Finishing first in the group rather than second can have an enormous impact on a team's tournament path. Group winners are seeded into more favorable Round of 32 matchups, typically facing third-placed qualifiers. Runners-up face other runners-up, which generally means tougher opposition earlier.
The bracket split also means that teams on the left side cannot meet teams on the right side until the Final. If the two best teams in the tournament end up on the same side of the bracket, they will meet in a semi-final rather than the Final. This is why the group draw and finishing position are so crucial to a team's overall chances.

48 teams play in 12 groups of 4. The top 2 from each group plus the 8 best third-placed teams enter a 32-team single-elimination bracket. This bracket splits into two halves, each leading to a semi-final, with the winners meeting in the Final.
FIFA uses a pre-determined assignment table. Once all group matches are done, the 8 best third-placed teams are slotted into specific Round of 32 matches based on which groups they came from. They cannot face a winner from their own group.
The 2026 World Cup Final is at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on July 19, 2026. The semi-finals are at AT&T Stadium in Dallas (July 14) and Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta (July 15).
