Two kinds of winless
Droughts are not created equal. The first kind is the side losing the underlying numbers every week: outshot, out-created, out-cornered. That is a genuinely bad team, and fading it is rational even at short prices. The second kind is the side that keeps drawing games it dominates. Its winless number looks identical in a table, but it is one bounce from a run of wins, and the odds on it lengthen every week the drought continues.
Separating the two takes the underlying stats, not the results column. That is what our model does before pricing any fixture involving a drought team, and why a winless side sometimes appears on the daily picks list in a goals market while never being backed to win.
The fade trap
Betting against winless teams feels safe and pays badly. Once a drought makes headlines, the price against the drought team collapses, and you are laying 1.30 against a side that wins the underlying battle half the time. Historically the profitable side of droughts is patience: waiting for the specific matchup where the drought team's real weakness, not its reputation, is what the market has underpriced. Reputation lags reality in both directions.
