USA hosts, group of unknowns

World Cup 2026 Group D: USA, Paraguay, Australia, Turkey

Group D is the USA's group, the third co-host's home draw, and the group with the widest spread in pre-tournament odds variance. USA are the on-paper favourite as host with their Premier League and Bundesliga-based core. Turkey under Vincenzo Montella are the European wildcard. Paraguay under Gustavo Alfaro have rebuilt with a Copa America 2024 quarter-final under their belt. Australia under Tony Popovic come off a difficult AFC qualifying campaign. Three of the four squads have managers who took over within the last 18 months, making Group D the least tactically settled group at the tournament.

What is at stake

USA need to top this group. Failure to do so would be a national-headline disaster for a generation of players who have grown up being told this World Cup is their moment. Turkey have a 22-year-old Arda Guler and a 30-year-old Hakan Calhanoglu in their sweet spots and are arguably underrated as a second-place pick. Paraguay have not been past a group stage since 2010, when they reached the quarter-final. Australia have not been past the Round of 16, which they reached in 2006.

Group D runs from 12 June to 25 June. Each team plays the other three once. The top two qualify directly for the Round of 32 in the expanded 48-team format. The eight best third-placed finishers across the 12 groups also progress, meaning a competitive third place can still get a side into the knockouts. Detail on how that third-place ranking is calculated is in the 2026 World Cup format guide.

The four teams

USA Co-host nation

Mauricio Pochettino took over in autumn 2024 from Gregg Berhalter, his first international job after the Tottenham, PSG and Chelsea Premier League years. The squad is the most European-based USA team in history. Christian Pulisic at AC Milan captains the side from a left wing or attacking midfield role. Weston McKennie at Juventus and Yunus Musah at AC Milan form the midfield. Tyler Adams at Bournemouth is the defensive anchor. Folarin Balogun at Monaco leads the line. Antonee Robinson at Fulham and Sergino Dest provide attacking full-back depth. Home crowd at MetLife Stadium, AT&T Stadium and SoFi Stadium is the variable that pushes USA into clear group favouritism. Realistic ceiling is the quarter-finals.

Turkey Group challenger

Vincenzo Montella has worked with this group long enough to install a 4-2-3-1 system that suits the personnel. Hakan Calhanoglu at Inter Milan captains the side from a deep-lying playmaker role that he has refined for Inzaghi at club level. Arda Guler at Real Madrid is the 22-year-old number 10 who has shown flashes of being the next-generation Turkish star. Kenan Yildiz at Juventus completes the attacking unit. Merih Demiral at centre-back and Ferdi Kadioglu at left-back provide the defensive spine. Turkey beat Wales and drew with Portugal en route to Euro 2024 quarter-final and have momentum coming into this tournament.

Paraguay Group challenger

Gustavo Alfaro inherited a Paraguay side mid-2023 and has steadily improved them through Copa America 2024 (quarter-final) and CONMEBOL qualifying. Gustavo Gomez at Palmeiras captains the side from centre-back. Miguel Almiron's veteran experience at right wing-back or right-mid is critical. Julio Enciso at Brighton provides creative spark when fit. The defensive identity is the strength: well-drilled, hard to break down, slow-paced. The attacking question is whether Antonio Sanabria can finish chances at the level expected of a number 9. Paraguay's pure organisational quality makes them tougher than the rankings suggest.

Australia Group challenger

Tony Popovic took over from Graham Arnold in late 2024. Mat Ryan in goal remains the captain and the most experienced player. Jackson Irvine of St Pauli captains from midfield depending on selection. Aaron Mooy has retired from international football and the midfield rebuild has been ongoing. Riley McGree at Middlesbrough and Connor Metcalfe at St Pauli provide the next-generation depth. The forward line of Mitchell Duke, Adam Taggart and Kusini Yengi is the weakness, with no Premier League regular in the group. Australia historically rely on defensive organisation and set pieces. The ceiling is third-place qualification.

Matchday by matchday

Matchday 1

Matchday 1 has USA vs Paraguay in Inglewood and Australia vs Turkey in Vancouver. USA vs Paraguay is the opening home game for the co-hosts, and Pochettino will lean on Pulisic's quality and the SoFi atmosphere. Paraguay's defensive organisation will make this a 1-0 or 2-0 USA win, not a comfortable rout. Australia vs Turkey is a close game on paper, with Turkey priced slightly favourite at 1.85-2.00. Guler against Australia's centre-back pair is the key matchup. Expect both halves to feature one goal each.

Matchday 2

Matchday 2 has Turkey vs Paraguay in Foxborough and USA vs Australia in Inglewood. Turkey vs Paraguay is a classic midfield-battle game, with Calhanoglu vs the Paraguayan central midfielders the key tactical question. USA vs Australia at SoFi is the most one-sided game on paper of the entire matchday, with USA priced at 1.45 or shorter. Australia will defend deep, USA will struggle to break them down in the first 60 minutes, and the goal will come late. Over 1.5 USA goals at 1.85 is the typical pricing.

Matchday 3

Matchday 3 has USA vs Turkey in Inglewood and Paraguay vs Australia in Santa Clara. USA vs Turkey is the marquee matchday 3 game of the entire group stage, the de-facto group winner final between the two strongest sides on paper. Pulisic vs Calhanoglu in the half-spaces is the headline duel. Paraguay vs Australia is a winner-take-third game, with both sides needing the points to secure a third-place qualification. Australia will defend deep, Paraguay will look to dominate possession and force errors.

BetBot's group winner pick

USA to win Group D at 1.85 implied price is the safe pick but the value bet is Turkey for group winner at 4.50, which becomes interesting if USA drop points in matchday 1 against Paraguay's disciplined low block. The structural USA edge is the home crowd, the tactical question is whether Pochettino has had enough time to install his system since taking over in late 2024.

Implied probabilities
USA favourite at 1.85 (54% implied), Turkey second at 4.50 (22% implied), Paraguay third at 5.50 (18% implied), Australia at 11.00.

The second place battle

Second place is the Turkey or Paraguay race. Turkey are the on-paper favourites at 2.10 for second place, with Paraguay at 3.80. The decisive game is Turkey vs Paraguay on matchday 2. The scenario in which Paraguay finish second is a Paraguay win there, plus a defensive game against USA in matchday 1 to keep the goal difference manageable.

Third place qualification scenarios

Third place qualification is Australia's only realistic path. Four points (a draw against Turkey or Paraguay plus a win against the other) is the historical threshold and the realistic target. Australia's defensive solidity and set-piece threat make this achievable. Paraguay finishing third is the alternative scenario if Turkey runs hot.

The eight best third-placed teams across the 12 groups all qualify for the Round of 32. The ranking is determined first by points, then goal difference, then goals scored, then disciplinary record. Four points has historically been enough in groups containing one dominant favourite, three points has been enough in groups with no dominant favourite. For Group D specifically, the realistic third-place threshold is four points.

Key player matchups across the group

Christian Pulisic vs Ferdi Kadioglu in USA vs Turkey is the matchday 3 headline. Hakan Calhanoglu vs Tyler Adams is the deep midfielder duel that decides which side controls the rhythm. Gustavo Gomez vs Folarin Balogun is the Paraguay centre-back against USA centre-forward test in matchday 1. Arda Guler against the Australian back line is the test of whether the 22-year-old delivers in his first World Cup.

Stadium notes

SoFi Stadium Inglewood hosts all three USA matches plus the Turkey vs Australia matchday 1 fixture, making it the central venue of the group. AT&T Stadium Arlington and MetLife East Rutherford each host one Group D fixture. BC Place Vancouver hosts Australia vs Turkey in matchday 1. Levi's Stadium Santa Clara hosts Paraguay vs Australia in matchday 3.

How Group D feeds into the Round of 32

Group D winner plays a Group C runner-up, almost certainly Morocco. Group D runner-up plays a Group C winner, almost certainly Brazil. The bracket configuration means a USA vs Brazil Round of 16 is the headline knockout fixture if both top their groups, with USA's path forced through Brazil to reach the quarters.
