Group J is the group of the defending champion. Argentina come into 2026 as the holders of the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Copa America. Lionel Messi has confirmed this is his fifth and final World Cup at age 38, the last chance for the most decorated player in football history to add a second world title at the end of his career. Around the Messi story, Austria under Ralf Rangnick (until his rumoured 2025 departure) have become the most dangerous European mid-tier side. Algeria return after 12 years away. Jordan are the World Cup debutants, the second Asian debutant in the tournament after Cape Verde.
Argentina need to win this group with the kind of comfort that confirms the 2022 title was the start of an era, not the swan song of a generation. For Austria it is the chance to deliver a Round of 16 result that matches Euro 2024's quarter-final near-miss against Turkey. For Algeria it is a return to the Round of 16 (their last World Cup appearance was 2014 in Brazil, where they reached the Round of 16). For Jordan it is the World Cup debut and the chance to take home a single competitive memory.
Group J runs from 16 June to 27 June. Each team plays the other three once. The top two qualify directly for the Round of 32 in the expanded 48-team format. The eight best third-placed finishers across the 12 groups also progress, meaning a competitive third place can still get a side into the knockouts. Detail on how that third-place ranking is calculated is in the 2026 World Cup format guide.
Lionel Scaloni took Argentina to the 2022 World Cup, the 2024 Copa America and is now the longest-tenured Argentina manager since Cesar Luis Menotti. Lionel Messi captains the side at 38, playing as a free roaming number 10 behind two forwards. Lautaro Martinez at Inter Milan leads the line. Julian Alvarez at his current club provides the depth. Enzo Fernandez at Chelsea, Alexis Mac Allister at Liverpool and Rodrigo De Paul at his current club form the midfield. Cristian Romero at Tottenham and Nicolas Otamendi (in his last World Cup) at the back. Emiliano Martinez in goal. The 4-3-3 with Messi as the free playmaker is the established tactical identity. Argentina are the third favourites for the tournament at 6.00 to 6.50.
Ralf Rangnick took over Austria in 2022 and installed the Red Bull press-and-counter system that defined his Leipzig and Manchester United years. David Alaba at Real Madrid captains from centre-back when fit. Marcel Sabitzer at Borussia Dortmund anchors midfield. Marko Arnautovic provides the veteran threat at 36. Christoph Baumgartner and Patrick Wimmer give the next-generation attacking depth. Konrad Laimer at Bayern Munich is the box-to-box dynamo. The 4-2-2-2 with two strikers is the tactical identity. Austria reached the Euro 2024 quarter-final, losing to Turkey on penalties, and have momentum coming into this World Cup.
Vladimir Petkovic (the long-time Switzerland manager) took over Algeria in 2024. Riyad Mahrez at Al-Ahli (or his current club) captains the side from the right wing or attacking midfield role at 35. Said Benrahma provides the wide threat. Houssem Aouar at Roma (or his current club) provides midfield creativity. Islam Slimani at his current club leads the line. The 4-3-3 system has been the constant since the Vahid Halilhodzic era. Algeria's 2014 Round of 16 in Brazil (when they lost 2-1 to Germany in extra time) is the high point of post-1986 Algerian World Cup football.
First World Cup. Hussein Ammouta is the head coach. Yazan Al-Naimat leads the line. Mahmoud Al-Mardi provides midfield depth. The squad is built around the Saudi Pro League and Qatari Stars League players, with one or two Asian Champions League regulars. The tactical identity is a 4-3-3 with deep defensive blocks and rapid transitions. Jordan's qualifying campaign included a Round of 16 appearance in the 2023 Asian Cup. The realistic target is to take a point and to honour the World Cup debut.

Matchday 1 has Argentina vs Algeria in Kansas City and Austria vs Jordan in Santa Clara. Argentina vs Algeria is the marquee matchday 1 game of the group. Messi against Mahrez is the showcase. Argentina are favourites at 1.40. The value is anytime scorer Messi at 1.75 or anytime scorer Lautaro Martinez at 1.85. Austria vs Jordan is the tactical chess match. Austria are favourites at 1.40 but the value is over 2.5 goals at 1.95 given Rangnick's attacking instructions.
Matchday 2 has Argentina vs Austria in Arlington and Jordan vs Algeria in Santa Clara. Argentina vs Austria is the matchday 2 tactical highlight, Rangnick's press against Scaloni's structured 4-3-3. Argentina are favourites at 1.65. Jordan vs Algeria is the third-place qualifier, the loser is out. Algeria are favourites at 1.85. The value is over 2.5 goals at 1.95.
Matchday 3 has Jordan vs Argentina in Arlington and Algeria vs Austria in Kansas City. Jordan vs Argentina is the dead-rubber if Argentina have already qualified, the chance for Messi to score the final group-stage goal of his career. Algeria vs Austria is the second-place qualifier in Kansas City, the loser is out. Mahrez against Sabitzer is the central matchup. The 1X2 market is one of the closest matchday 3 prices, around 2.50 / 3.10 / 2.90.
Argentina to win Group J at 1.30 is the obvious pick. The value is the Argentina to win all three group games at 1.75 given Messi's central role in the system. Austria to top the group at 8.00 is the long-shot value, plausible only if Argentina stumble against Algeria in matchday 1.
Second place is Austria's at 1.55, with Algeria at 4.00 and Jordan at 25.00. The Austria second-place lock is the structural identity. Algeria second-place requires Mahrez to deliver a vintage performance against Austria.
Third place qualification is realistically Algeria's path if they lose to Austria. Four points is the historical threshold and a win against Jordan plus a competitive draw against Argentina or Austria would deliver it. Jordan third-place is essentially impossible at this level of opposition.
The eight best third-placed teams across the 12 groups all qualify for the Round of 32. The ranking is determined first by points, then goal difference, then goals scored, then disciplinary record. Four points has historically been enough in groups containing one dominant favourite, three points has been enough in groups with no dominant favourite. For Group J specifically, the realistic third-place threshold is four points.
Lionel Messi vs David Alaba in Argentina vs Austria is the matchday 2 headline. Riyad Mahrez vs the Argentine right-back in matchday 1 is the wide-attacker test. Lautaro Martinez vs Algeria's Aissa Mandi at centre-back is the centre-forward duel. Marcel Sabitzer vs Enzo Fernandez is the central-midfielder battle that decides the matchday 2 rhythm.
Arrowhead Stadium Kansas City hosts Argentina vs Algeria and Algeria vs Austria. AT&T Stadium Arlington hosts Argentina vs Austria and Jordan vs Argentina. Levi's Stadium Santa Clara hosts Austria vs Jordan and Jordan vs Algeria. Each venue gets two Group J matches.
Group J winner plays a Group I runner-up, likely Senegal or Norway. Group J runner-up plays a Group I winner, almost certainly France. The bracket configuration means a France vs Argentina Round of 16 is the headline knockout fixture if France stumble in their group, the rematch of the 2022 final.
